CHESSMOM 2026 – Follow up announcement and key details

Important Dates

* Application period opened
* July 1 – Application deadline
* July 10 – Selected participants will be announced

Accommodation clarification

Women’s team delegations normally receive accommodation for five players, distributed as two double rooms and one single room.

For federations with a player approved under the ChessMom program, the total number of rooms does not increase. Instead, the single room is upgraded to a double room. This allows the player, together with her child and caregiver, to stay in the same room, while the other four players are accommodated in the remaining two double rooms.

The total number of rooms assigned to each delegation remains unchanged.

Clarification on Required Letters

FIDE and the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess are inviting players, national federations, and the wider chess community to take the first step toward ChessMom 2026.

Following its successful debut at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, the ChessMom Project returns for the 46th Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan. The programme provides financial and logistical support to professional women chess players who are mothers, allowing them to compete at the highest level alongside their children and a caregiver.

If you are a player and a mother, or if you know someone who could benefit from the programme, please complete the short registration form via the link below.

Register here: https://forms.gle/wuX5ra2pgyDTrwyE8

This early registration allows the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess to:

  • Identify players interested in the programme
  • Share updated information as soon as the official Olympiad regulations are released
  • Offer guidance and support throughout the application process

Who is eligible

Participation in ChessMom is for players who are part of the official delegations of their national federations for the 46th Chess Olympiad. For the 2026 edition, mothers with children under two years of age at the time of the Olympiad are eligible to apply – an expansion from the under-one limit applied in 2024.

Application requirements

Interested national federations and eligible players are invited to prepare the following information:

  • Player’s full name, FIDE ID, national federation, and citizenship
  • Visa requirements for Uzbekistan
  • Child’s full name and date of birth
  • Accompanying person’s full name, relationship to the player or child, and citizenship
  • Letter of request from the player
  • Letter of concurrence from the national federation confirming participation in the 2026 Olympiad

A note for national federations

Federations are encouraged to share this registration link with eligible players within their teams and to support the identification of potential beneficiaries. National federations participating in the Olympiad normally receive three rooms as part of their accommodation package. For delegations that include a player approved under ChessMom, the player’s single room is upgraded to a double room to allow the caregiver and child to stay together with the team. The total number of rooms allocated to each delegation remains unchanged.

ChessMom reflects FIDE’s commitment to ensuring that no woman is forced to choose between motherhood and a professional career in chess. Six players from across the world were supported through the programme in Budapest 2024, and the 2026 edition continues that work with expanded reach and updated eligibility.

ChessMom Project returns for 2026 Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan https://www.fide.com/chessmom-project-returns-for-2026-chess-olympiad-in-uzbekistan/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 11:10:47 +0000 https://www.fide.com/?p=39797

FIDE and the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess are proud to announce the return of the ChessMom Project for the 46th Chess Olympiad, to be held in Uzbekistan in 2026.

This pioneering initiative was first introduced at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and federations alike. The ChessMom Project reflects FIDE’s commitment to supporting professional women chess players who are mothers, helping them continue their chess careers while caring for their young children.

“I think it is important that women in chess feel supported. We cannot take all the barriers for women away, but with programs like ChessMom we want to help professional chess players balance their career and personal life.” — Dana Reizniece, FIDE Deputy Chair of the Management Board

The core mission of the project remains unchanged: to ensure that motherhood and a professional chess career can go hand in hand. The program provides financial support for female players with babies, allowing them to travel and compete with the assistance of a caregiver.

For the 2026 edition, an important update has been introduced:

  • Mothers with children under two years of age (previously under one) at the time of the Olympiad are now eligible to apply.

Key details for the 2026 ChessMom Project

  • FIDE will support 10 female chess players, based on rating (highest to lowest)
  • At least 1 player per Continent in guaranteed
  • FIDE will provide reimbursement up to €1,000 per player (or €500 EUR from same continent as Olympiad host country) who travels with an under 2 years old child, to cover the caregiver’s flight ticket to the 46th Chess Olympiad (most airlines do not charge for child under 2, traveling with an adult)
  • Child and accompanied caregiver shall be considered as part of the National Official Delegation with all applicable rights. Meaning providing lodge and meals, and any other applicable discounted fee as part of the Official Delegation (not visitor)
  • National Federations* should consider child and accompanied caregiver as part of the National Official Delegation with all applicable rights.

Application requirements

Interested national federations and eligible players are invited to prepare the following information:

  • Player’s full name, FIDE ID, national federation, and citizenship
  • Visa requirement for Uzbekistan
  • Child’s full name and date of birth
  • Accompanying person’s full name, relationship to the player or child, and citizenship
  • Letter of request from the player
  • Letter of concurrence from the National Federation confirming participation in the 2026 Olympiad

Further details – including the official application form, timeline, and submission deadlines – will be announced once the official Olympiad regulations are published by the organizers.

Note to National Federations

National teams participating in Chess Olympiad normally receive three (3) rooms as part of their official accommodation package — typically, two double rooms and one single room for five (5) players.

For delegations that include a player approved under the ChessMom Project, the single room will be upgraded to a double room to allow the caregiver and the baby to stay comfortably together with the delegation.

It is important to note that this adjustment does not increase the total number of rooms provided to each delegation. The delegation will still receive a total of three rooms, as per standard allocation.

Building on the success of 2024

The first edition of ChessMom took place at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where six mothers from across the world received support through the program: Alina Kashlinskaya (Poland), Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia), Yuliia Osmak (Ukraine), Aster Melake Bantiwalu (Ethiopia), Rauha Shipindo (Namibia) and Nolwazi Nkwanyane (Eswatini).

Their stories demonstrated that motherhood truly can coexist with continued professional growth.

As Namibian player Rauha Shipindo shared:

“I am so grateful to those who initiated the ChessMom program. It is trying to close the gap that is there for women. If I have a newborn like this, I might weigh in and say, will I stay to look after my little one, or will I go to the Chess Olympics? So it’s combining that gap and closing it.”

Continuing the mission

With the 2026 edition, the ChessMom Project continues to break new ground in supporting women in chess. It stands as a symbol of FIDE’s ongoing dedication to equality, inclusion, and respect for the diverse paths that bring players to the chessboard.

FIDE and the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess will work tirelessly to continue this mission.

“We are committed to ensuring that no woman is forced to choose between motherhood and her professional career as a chess player. ChessMom continues to grow, raise awareness, and send a message that mothers who play chess are not alone.” — Francisco Javier Cruz Arce, FIDE Women’s Commission Member and Project Initiator

More details about the project will be shared soon.

Balancing moves and motherhood: ChessMom initiative continues https://www.fide.com/balancing-moves-and-motherhood-chessmom-initiative-continues/ Fri, 09 May 2025 09:50:01 +0000 https://www.fide.com/?p=34774

On the occasion of Mother’s Day, FIDE and the Women’s Commission express appreciation for the many women who contribute to the chess world while also raising families. Balancing the responsibilities of motherhood with a professional chess career is no easy task, and we acknowledge the dedication, strength, and perseverance of these remarkable players.

In this spirit, FIDE is proud to announce the return of the ChessMom project for the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan. This initiative reflects FIDE’s continued dedication to supporting women in chess, particularly those who are mothers or expecting.

Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants during the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Hungary, the ChessMom project will not only continue but expand, ensuring that more players can pursue their chess ambitions without having to choose between career and motherhood.

In 2024, six mothers were selected for the inaugural program:

  • Alina Kashlinskaya (Poland)
  • Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia)
  • Yuliia Osmak (Ukraine)
  • Aster Melake Bantiwalu (Ethiopia)
  • Rauha Shipindo (Namibia)
  • Nolwazi Nkwanyane (Eswatini)

These players participated in the Olympiad with the support of the ChessMom initiative, which covered the cost of an accompanying caregiver, allowing the players to focus on their games while ensuring their children were cared for.

One of the most inspiring stories came from Rauha Shipindo, a Namibian player who competed in her national qualifier just two weeks before giving birth, and then went on to represent her country at the Olympiad, accompanied by her baby and a caregiver.

“I am so grateful to those who initiated the ChessMom program. It is trying to close the gap that is there for women. If I have a newborn like this, I might weigh in and say, will I stay to look after my little one, or will I go to the Chess Olympics? So it’s combining that gap and closing it,” Rauha Shipindo said.

For Rauha, ChessMom was more than logistical assistance – it was the chance to compete at the highest level without sacrificing her role as a new mother.

The program provides financial support to players with infants under one-year-old, allowing them to travel with a companion who can care for the child during competition. As Dana Reizniece, Deputy Chair of the FIDE Management Board, explains:

“I think it is important that women in chess feel supported. We cannot take all the barriers for women away, but with programs like ChessMom we want to help professional chess players to balance their career and personal life.”

Francisco Javier Cruz Arce, member of the FIDE Women’s Commission and project co-initiator, reaffirms this mission:

“We are committed to ensuring that no woman is forced to choose between motherhood and her professional career as a chess player. We are happy that ChessMom continues to grow, raise awareness, and expand. We want mothers who play chess to know that they will not be alone. FIDE is here to support them every step of the way.”

The idea for ChessMom was conceived during the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai. Reflecting on its origins, Anastasia Sorokina, Chair of the FIDE Women’s Commission, shared:

“The idea for this project was born during the Olympiad in Chennai. While discussing with commission member Francisco Cruz, we spoke about the clear need for such support. For many women chess players who are planning to become mothers, the fear of pausing or ending their professional careers is very real. ChessMom addresses that directly — showing that it is possible to be both a mother and a competitive chess professional. This initiative is more than logistical support; it is a message that women do not have to choose between motherhood and ambition. It gives hope, security, and dignity to women at a critical moment in their lives.”

This announcement is a message to all players who are new or expecting mothers: your place in the chess world is secure and celebrated. FIDE encourages you to prepare for participation in your national teams for the 2026 Chess Olympiad. Application details for the next edition of ChessMom will be shared in the coming months.

FIDE launches the ChessMom initiative https://www.fide.com/fide-launches-the-chessmom-initiative/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 14:06:33 +0000 https://www1090.fide.com/?p=25357 FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess is pleased to announce a new initiative focused on supporting Professional Chess Players going through motherhood

The ChessMom pilot project aims to provide support for professional chess players who are mothers of infants under one year old. Specifically, through this initiative, all expenses related to an accompanying or caregiver person for ten female players traveling with their infants to the 45th Chess Olympiad will be covered.

Dana Reizniece-Ozola, FIDE’s Deputy Chair of the Management Board, expressed her support, drawing on her personal experience as a chess player and mother of four.

“As a chess player and as a mother of four children and as someone who actively played chess, I understand how hard it is for mothers who are professional players to cope with both maintaining their career and living and fulfilling the critical role a mother has in the first year of their child. FIDE, therefore, fully supports this initiative by the Commission for Women’s Chess, and we will actively look towards other ways on how we can help and support chess mothers in the future,” said Dana Reizniece-Ozola.

The Chess Olympiad organizer will recognize both the child and the accompanying caregiver as integral parts of the National Official Delegation, granting them all applicable rights. This includes discounted full board rates where applicable, with FIDE covering lodgings, meals, and any other applicable discounted fees as part of the Official Delegation.

National Delegations should, therefore, consider a child and the accompanying caregiver as part of the National Official Delegation, with all applicable rights.

“In recent years, we have seen many initiatives by FIDE in favor of Women. Now we address the most important one in their adult lives, motherhood. Our players should not have to choose between family and chess. I hope this pilot program transitions to become the norm in the near future,” said Francisco J Cruz Arce, WOM Member and ChessMom Project Leader.

WOM urges National and Continental Federations to review and adjust their requirements for National Teams to include provisions for chess players who are mothers. The hope is that this initiative will evolve into consistent support for professional chess players experiencing motherhood during significant tournaments.

“The idea of the project is to keep professional chess players in chess in the early stages following the birth of a child. Many chess players can’t come to the Olympiad and other chess events because there is no possibility for them to take care of a baby. This project can become a great social initiative,” said Anastasia Sorokina, WOM Chair.
